What is Scar Removal?

Scar removal involves several different techniques to restore the appearance of a large and unsightly facial scar. This can be performed with the use of laser treatments, injections, and sometimes surgery. Scar removal treatment can improve the appearance of an unaesthetic scar, keloids, hypertrophic scar, or deep scar present after previous surgery or injury.

How is Scar Removal Performed?

The surgical procedure is often performed with local anesthesia, although mild sedation can be provided for your comfort. During surgical scar revision, the scar is removed completely, and the new wound is carefully closed with layered sutures. Some larger scars may require the use of a tissue transfer or skin grafting from another area of the body to close the scar revision wound. If a large skin graft is required, tissue expansion may be necessary to stretch the skin. During your consultation for scar removal Bellevue facial plastic surgeon Dr. Ort will go over the exact treatment plan in more detail.

Who is a Candidate for Scar Removal?

Scars are the result of trauma to the skin and can be present as discoloration, surface irregularities, an overgrowth of tissue, or depressed marks in the skin. It is recommended that you observe your scar or wound for about a year and try conservative methods such as applying a scar cream and massaging because the tissue continues to undergo remodeling. An unsightly scar not improving after trying the conservative methods can potentially be treated with injections to break up the fibrotic, thickened areas, by laser skin resurfacing to improve hyperpigmentation of the scar, or by surgical excision (scar removal) of the scar tissue and re-closing the wound in a tension-free manner for the best possible aesthetic outcome.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

Your recovery after scar removal will depend on the techniques used and the size of the scar. After surgical revision, the stitches are generally removed at 1 week after the procedure. Some swelling and discomfort can be expected for several days in the scar revision site as well as the skin grafting site.

It is important to keep the revision site clean and dry at all times and avoid sun exposure while your new scar is healing. Over time, our Bellevue scar removal patients can expect their scar to continue to fade with time, blending in with the surrounding skin.
