Well-defined cheeks are components of an attractive face.

With the aging process, our cheeks tend to droop and lose volume in the midface, causing a sunken look or an unsightly groove in the cheeks that accentuates the bagginess of the lower eyelids above and bulging of the cheek tissue below. This results in an irregular cheek contour rather than a smooth curvature, known as the Ogee curve, and can be distressing to some. These changes can manifest earlier and more significantly in some people than others, as their cheek fat pads get thinner and descend with gravity, muscles stretch, and the facial bones go through changes as well.

A cheek lift can help restore your confidence by bringing a youthful volume and contour to your face. As a fellowship-trained facial specialist, Dr. Ort performs high-quality facial plastic surgery procedures including cheek lifts, serving patients of various ages and backgrounds in Bellevue, Washington, and surrounding Seattle areas.

What is a Cheek Lift?

A cheek lift is a surgical procedure to target loose, sagging cheek tissue and to suspend it upward to restore a more rounded and youthful facial contour. It can be performed by itself or combined with other procedures like blepharoplasty, or as an inherent part of a facelift surgery. Depending on where you are in your aging process, these procedures may be recommended to be performed together in order to achieve the best rejuvenation of your face.

There are several techniques to a cheek lift, and these are not a one-size-fits-all type of surgery. Each method has slightly variable benefits and indications, depending on the patient’s structural differences and degree of volume loss or sagging. Dr. Ort is proficient at performing all major cheek lift procedures including a deep cheek lift and a lift with cheek implant augmentation.

How Is a Cheek Lift Performed?

A cheek lift is typically performed with general anesthesia or IV sedation. In most cases, this is an outpatient procedure and patients are expected to go home the same day. Cheek lifts may take about 2 to 3 hours, although it could take longer if they are performed as part of a facelift or combined with other surgeries such as lower eyelid lift or Fat transfer to the cheeks. Most of the cheek lift incisions are limited and hidden cosmetically to minimize visible scarring. Incisions can be made in the hairline by your temples to access the cheek tissue. From there, Dr. Ort will pull the cheek muscle and tissue up and adjust the skin to smoothly drape over the tightly suspended structures underneath.

An incision along the lower eyelid can be made if the cheek lift is done in conjunction with a lower eyelid lift. Combining the cheek and the eyelid lift together can create a smooth transition at the lower eyelid-cheek junction. If cheek volumization is desired in addition to lifting, an incision is often made through the mouth and a cheek implant is inserted to augment the cheekbone structure. This allows our surgeon to address significantly flattened cheeks and to improve the tear trough.

Is there a Non-surgical Cheek Lift?

There are other non-surgical methods to address your sagging or sunken cheeks if you are not yet ready for cheek lift surgery. Cheek fillers may offer a great temporary solution to volumize and lift your cheeks. Cheek fillers may last up to 2 years, with repeated visits for maintenance.

What is Cheek Lift Recovery Like?

The procedure is generally well-tolerated and most of our Bellevue cheek lift patients are able to return to work or school after a few days, although swelling may continue to decrease slowly over the next weeks to months. You’ll be prescribed medications to manage pain and swelling for the first few days, as well as antibiotics to help prevent infection. We recommend taking it easy and avoiding sudden stretching of the face or yawning widely for the first couple of weeks. If there are sutures on the outside of the skin that need to be taken out, they are typically removed 1 week after the surgery.
