Rhinoplasty Preparation

What Is the Surgical Process?

Depending on your individualized rhinoplasty plan, the procedure will be done either with you completely asleep or completely awake with numbing medication. A closed rhinoplasty approach involves making incisions inside the nose so that you won’t have any visible scars. Open nasal surgery is used to repair more significant problems and requires incisions inside the nose and along the middle underside part of the nose. Keeping in mind the plastic surgery aesthetic, these scars are strategically placed, and the scars are intended to heal as imperceptibly as possible. During your surgery, the nasal cartilage may also be trimmed, refined, and sutured to achieve the desired nose shape. Nasal bones may also be shaved down or reshaped if necessary.

Recovery From Rhinoplasty

You will likely return home on the same day as your procedure but will require several days for recovery at home. We recommend having a family member or friend available to take you from the surgery center, as well as be available to assist you around the house for the first 24 hours. During your recovery, it is important to follow Dr. Ort’s guidelines to heal well and to have the best possible outcome.

What Is The Best Age For Rhinoplasty?

Unless there is a traumatic injury, such as a nasal fracture, the youngest age to perform a rhinoplasty is after all skeletal growth is complete. For women, this is usually around age 16-17; for men, this is at 19-21. Once adult growing is complete, it is never too late to change the quality of your breathing or the appearance of your nose.

There are patients in their 20s and 30s who obtain both functional and cosmetic rhinoplasties, as well as those in their 60s and 70s. As we age, there may be issues that arise that merit surgical correction, such as a worsening septal deviation, or obstruction of a nasal passage. How many appointments will I need?

After your plastic surgery, Dr. Ort will see you after a week. During that appointment, she will remove bandages, nasal splints, and/or stitches, as well as monitor your initial recovery period.

After your initial follow-up, she will have you return a few more times over the next few months. Most patients can expect between three and four check-up appointments in total, but Dr. Ort will tell you at every appointment about your next appointment.

How long until I see results?

The first few days after surgery are the most uncomfortable. This will be improved with sleeping in an elevated position, cool clothes to the face, rest, and pain medication. After this period, there will be visible bruising and inflammation for one to two weeks.

Most of our patients try to avoid going back to work during this time, even if just to avoid answering any questions from curious or concerned friends and colleagues. Once all this dissipates, the remainder of the 1+ year of recovery will be the resolution of swelling of the face and inside the nose, which is mainly only noticeable to you and your very close family, eventually leading to the final and beautiful outcome.

How Long Do Rhinoplasty Results Last?

Without touch-ups, you can expect the results to last approximately one to two years. After this time, the body will begin to gradually and harmlessly reabsorb the hyaluronic acid filler. You can always choose to come back for additional placement of filler or opt to have a surgical rhinoplasty.

For a surgical rhinoplasty, the results of surgery are permanent. After some initial bruising and swelling, it may take over a year for complete healing. During this time, the nose will go through several stages of healing, before ultimately revealing its final result.

Will People Be Able To Tell I’ve Had A Nose Job?

Depending on what type of surgery you’ve had, your friends or family may only notice an improved or changed aesthetic to your face but may not exactly be able to pinpoint what’s different. This is often the mark of a highly skilled Rhinoplasty surgeon. Some rhinoplasties involve only microscopic changes but result in tremendous improvement. Because recovery can be over 1 year, changes are very gradual, allowing for even the most dramatic of changes to go virtually unnoticed, unless you choose to share with others.
