What Is a Facelift?

A Facelift, also known as Rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and tighten loose tissue around the midface, jowls, and jawline. It can take up to ten years off your appearance and is one of the most common facial cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the United States.

There are many facelift types and techniques that are available, and facelifts are not a one-size-fits-all type of surgery. Dr. Ort proficiently performs all major types of facelifts available including the deep plane facelift. Based on where you are in the aging process and what your aesthetic goals are, Dr. Ort will offer a rejuvenation plan that best suits your unique desires and facial features.

The Benefits of Getting a Facelift:

  • Your face looks years younger. As a facelift tightens the skin and lifts the face back to a more youthful position, the change in your appearance is one of the most dramatic and long-lasting changes you can make--a truly worthwhile investment.
  • You can feel more confident. You may see a noticeable improvement of your face and neck, which in turn, helps you feel and live your life more confidently.
  • You can have multiple procedures done at the same time. Other procedures such as blepharoplasty, brow lift, rhinoplasty, and chin implant can often be combined with face and neck lift to achieve a more harmonious and balanced face. If you are interested in having more than a facelift, combining them can reduce your cost as well as the healing time, allowing you to enjoy the combined results.
  • A facelift is customized for you. Your face is uniquely yours and it should reflect the best version of you. A facelift is customized to your problem areas and will focus on your particular areas of concern, including your jowls, mid-cheek grooves, and your neckline.

Your Facelift Options

Your facelift can be performed alone or in conjunction with a cheek lift, neck lift and fat grafting procedures.

Although these procedures are named individually with their own distinct surgical techniques and applications, they are closely related. Dr. Ort may recommend any combination of these procedures with your best interest in mind, for a more natural and complete rejuvenation. Both men and women are candidates for facelift and neck lift procedures.

Many people reach a point in their aging journey where they no longer feel like their face represents their youthful lifestyle and attitude towards life. If you’ve been considering taking the next step to surgically improve the signs of aging, then here are some answers to common questions for patients considering the best in facial rejuvenation procedures.

How Is a Facelift Performed?

A facelift is often performed under general anesthesia but can be performed under IV sedation and local anesthesia depending on the patient’s comfort level. Incisions will then be made behind the ear and within the hairline where scarring will be well-concealed. Through the incision, Dr. Ort will reposition and tighten the underlying tissue, gently smoothing out wrinkles and folds, and removing any excess skin.

Typically, a facelift procedure takes about 4-5 hours by itself but can be longer if combined with a brow lift, rhinoplasty, or a neck lift. The incisions will then be closed and bandaged. You will likely go home the same day after their surgery. If drains are placed, they are usually removed in a day or two. Sutures are removed at around 1 week after the surgery.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

Your overall good health matters more than your chronological age when determining to undergo a facelift. However, if you have advanced signs of aging such as deep wrinkles, sagging and laxity of skin, and if you are pulling your face and neck skin upward with your fingers while you look in the mirror, then you are likely to benefit more from a lifting surgery than other non-surgical treatments like Botox and fillers.

Are Facelifts Safe?

If performed by a well-trained and qualified surgeon, facelifts are safe procedures and are the most widely performed facial surgery.

However, as with any surgery, there are potential risks. As such, it is vital to choose a plastic surgeon who can provide a thorough medical history and exam to maintain your utmost safety during surgery.

Although rare and unlikely, some of the potential risks of facelift surgery include bleeding, infection, potential hair loss around the incision, potential damage to the facial nerve, and skin irregularities, discoloration, or necrosis. Anesthesia risks will also be reviewed prior to surgery.

How Do I Prepare for a Facelift?

During your individual consultation all of your questions will be answered in a relaxed and comfortable setting. When you are ready to move forward with a facelift, you’ll have an additional preoperative visit, during which procedural details and more in-depth and review pre- and post-surgical instructions will be reviewed.

When indicated, some blood tests, labs, and medical clearance may be obtained prior to surgery. Any other questions or requests are discussed during that appointment as well.

What Is the Recovery Process After a Facelift?

Most patients who opt for a facelift take 10 to 14 days off to recover while the bruising and swelling improve. After surgery, you can expect to take it easy and avoid heavy activity for 2 weeks. Social downtime can be longer, depending on the patient’s comfort level and degree of swelling. You’ll be prescribed medications to manage pain and swelling for the first few days, as well as antibiotics to help prevent infection.

Will I Look Different After a Facelift Surgery?

During the initial healing period, it is completely normal to feel overwhelmed by the immediate changes, swelling, bruising, and feelings of uncertainty. Seattle facial plastic surgeon Dr. Yirae Ort cares about your experience and well-being as much as your outcome and is available to help guide you through the process.

Once the swelling has diminished, you can enjoy a refreshed, youthful appearance that lasts for years to come. The goal of Dr. Ort is to safely deliver exceptional facelift results that don’t leave behind any obvious signs of surgery. Your facelift surgery should bring out the best version of yourself.

Facelift FAQ

Will I have scars after a facelift?

All surgeries leave some degree of scarring. However, keeping with the plastic surgery aesthetic, the scars are placed imperceptibly and designed for discretion. For a lower facelift, the scars are typically just in front of or behind the ear. The upper facelift incisions are typically in the hairline. Dr. Ort strives to keep all incisions off the face, allowing you to have the best aesthetic outcome possible.

Will I have to wear bandages after a facelift?

Most patients will wear a face wrap for the first couple of weeks post-surgery. This dressing is for improved comfort, and to help to reduce and minimize swelling. Afterward, another dressing is unlikely to be required.

How much does a facelift cost?

No two faces are alike, and therefore, neither is any facelift. During your consultation with Dr. Ort, she will examine your skin and address your concerns. Then, she will create a customized surgical plan tailored to your individual needs, which will also lead to an equally custom quote. This will include your anesthetic and facility costs as well so that you are well informed of your final facelift cost.

What is the best age to get a facelift?

There is no specific age to consider a facelift, as there are many factors that contribute to facial aging. First, smoking and repeated sun damage can cause you to age prematurely. Heredity also plays a role. Significant weight loss can cause sagging skin. All of these factors will contribute to what is the opportune time to consider a facelift. During your consultation with Dr. Ort, she can expertly guide you on what procedures can best address your aesthetic concerns.

Can a facelift be done more than once?

While a facelift is a permanent surgical procedure, this does not halt the aging process. It merely turns back the clock, on average about 10 years. Depending on the age when you have a facelift, the type of skin you have, and your lifestyle choices will determine if or when a second facelift will be needed. On average, if you are in your mid-50s, an additional lift will be recommended in your 70s or 80s.

Will my expressions change after a facelift?

As a highly trained facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Ort's goal is to give you an expertly tailored and natural look that is not overly done. Your face will remain mobile and with full expression while smoothing wrinkles and getting rid of excess and droopy skin that has developed over time from loss of collagen.

Are there laser treatments that can be done in place of a facelift?

There are a variety of laser treatments available, all of which target skin texture. These include fine lines, skin discoloration, enlarged pores, and scarring. Some lasers can even stimulate collagen production, giving the skin a tighter appearance. While laser procedures are excellent adjuvant treatments that are strongly encouraged to maintain smooth skin and even tone, they do not have the same effect as a surgical lift.

What is a liquid facelift?

A liquid facelift, also known as a non-surgical facelift, is a temporary facelift that is accomplished with the use of hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that is responsible for retaining water, to keep joints fluid and cells hydrated. The injectable kind of hyaluronic acid is used to plump up deep lines in the face, resolve wrinkles, and smooth the face, making you look younger and elevated.

While the results are temporary with fillers and they cannot provide the same changes of a surgical facelift, they are excellent alternatives if you’re not quite ready for surgery. Best of all, a liquid facelift is an immediate solution that is non-surgical and lasts 1-2 years.
