Jawline contouring surgery can offer significant improvements to the shape of your face and restore overall facial balance.

Also known as a V-line surgery, jawline surgery is an operation to surgically reshape the jaw bone that can transform the patient’s appearance from the frontal view as well as the side view. For this type of facial plastic surgery, it is important to seek a facial surgeon who is well-versed in facial surgeries.

As a double board certified surgeon performing oral and maxillofacial surgery and facial cosmetic surgery, Dr. Yirae Ort provides expert cosmetic jaw surgeries in her premiere Bellevue facial plastic surgery practice.

What Can Jaw Contouring Surgery Achieve?

If you feel that your lower face is too wide and square in appearance and want a long term solution to achieve a slimmer face shape, jawline contouring surgery may be an option. Squareness of your face can be caused by a few factors. It could be due to an excessive angle at the posterior part of the mandible below the ear, or the thickness of the jaw bone itself, or enlarged jaw muscles involved in chewing. By reducing the angle of the jaw bone and modifying the jaw muscles on the sides of your face, this surgery can help create a more feminine jaw shape and a more egg-shaped face

However if you are facing the opposite problem of not having enough jaw definition and are concerned about your lower face being too narrow, customized jaw angle facial implants can offer a good contouring option for the jawline augmentation. Jaw augmentation, or mandibular augmentation does not necessarily involve cutting of the bone, as the implants are designed to be added on top of the bone, beneath the jaw muscles.

How is Jawline Surgery Performed?

A CT scan of your face is taken for meticulous surgical planning. Jawline surgery is performed under general anesthesia and can take about 3 hours, but sometimes more if other procedures are combined with it. Sometimes jawline contouring surgery can be performed as a part of the Facial Feminization surgery to produce a slimmer and softer facial profile.

Incisions are typically made inside the mouth so there are no visible scars. From there, the lower jaw, also called the mandible, is accessed. The mandible can be reshaped using several techniques. Depending on your anatomic conditions and cosmetic concerns, Dr. Ort may recommend removing a small strip of excess bone at the mandibular angle and shaving down the remaining sharp edges on the outer aspect of the jaw. Modification of the jaw muscle may also be involved.

Excessive jaw angle can be shaved to achieve a smoother contour; however, the angle itself should not be eliminated. In fact, a defined jaw angle is a youthful facial feature that we may lose as we age because of the bony changes that occur slowly during our lifetime. Dr. Ort recommends contouring only the excessive part of the mandibular bone or muscle.

Will the Jawline Surgery Affect Function?

Jaw contouring surgery is a cosmetic operation and is not intended to affect your ability to chew and swallow foods or speak. Due to modification of jaw muscles and swelling caused by the surgery you may experience some discomfort during the recovery period, but this improves over time. With the use of a three dimensional CT scan to plan and prepare for the surgery, the nerve affecting sensation in the lower jaw, lips, and chin can be avoided to enable relatively safer surgery.

will be bandaged and the dressings are typically left intact for the first few days. Swelling and bruising are expected in the first couple weeks. Dr. Ort will prescribe pain medication as needed. Numbness in the lower jaw and lips may occur, which typically improves over time.

Light walking is encouraged starting one day after surgery to help decrease swelling. But expect to take it easy and avoid strenuous activity. A soft, non-chew diet is recommended for the first 2 weeks to help minimize disturbance in the jaw muscle and bone. Most of our Bellevue jawline surgery patients are able to return to work in 1 – 2 weeks after surgery, although it may take several weeks to months for the swelling to resolve.
